Great initiative Jack and an excellent objective. Yes let's discuss ideas, like Eleonore Roosevelt is attributed to having said:
Quote:
Great minds discuss ideas, mediocre minds discuss events, small minds discuss personalities.

Therefore, I think it's also an idea to set some confines and avoid name calling in overheated discussions. So I would suggest that Eleonore's "small minds" should be discouraged from posting too much of that here.

Discussing ideas is great but indeed we should keep things rational strictly using scientific methods. For instance if your idea is that the Earth is an apple, that's fine but then we do a prediction, stating that the earth is edible. Then we test that idea and we take a bite of the earth and as a result we break our teeth on the stone. So, swe hase obsersed shad she sessd sfsailed. Hence the Earth is not an apple. The idea is wrong and we have to accept that and that's hard. If you want to know how hard, it is to be wrong, you can study Thomas Kuhn

Andre, I agree with you, this is a science forum. I want to keep a friendly, welcoming atmosphere, as is standard on internet forums "flaming" will not be tolerated. If certain members want to discuss "small mind" topics, they are free to do so although I ask that this be restricted to the Discussion board.

Some users may not be familiar with the scientific method, this is to be expected, however I do not want them to think that their ideas are not valid. In the ideal situation, more knowledgable users will guide less knowledgable users through the process by asking probing questions and highlighting major flaws in their thinking.

I think the clock is wacky on this forum. I had to set it to GMT -4 to get
the time to stamp correctly on my posts.

LOL! I'm living on Tulsa Time.

Mine is not stamping correctly either but that seems due to daylight savings.
