Site suggestions..

Think there should be another dedicated forum board?

Perhaps there is something about the site you think should change?

This is my first forum so any suggestions are more than welcome. This is the place to post your suggestions...

I suggest you change your avatar. Its size anyway.

I would definitely suggest adding a trash can....but something with more of an "Earth sciencey" kind of name...like the "marianis trench" (sp?)...or the name of something where things go to die (no...not FOX television Smile)...what's the name of those famous tar pits?

any other suggestions?
scpg02

La Brea tar pits. Not sure about that spelling. Yeah it needs a catchy name.

Trash can is a good idea, will add it some time in the near future, I personally would prefer to call it The Mariana Trench, it seems a bit grander and more final.

Deep but doesn't give an immediate vision of what it is for. Need a name that relates the concept.

edit: My son suggested caldera which is good but sounds more like the section for flame wars.

Edit #2: How about subduction zone?

I like it, but then I found this place http://www.geologyrocks.co.uk/forum and it's been done before Sad . We could nick their idea, but I would kind of feel a bit dirty, we need something more original.

The current front runner has to be the tar pits now, personally I associate caldera with new life, where rocks are explosively born.

Just the general name tar pits works. I like it. Caldera, I can see how you would get new life out of that. I was thinking fire pit. LOL! How about black smokers for the flame wars section. They are in hot water!

I like "The Tar Pits"....'cause dude....if you step into a tar pit...forget about it....cause man....your gone.
(sounds like a "Deep thought...by Jack Handy on SNL) Smile

So who provides the feathers?
Matt

If it was to be used as an archive you could always go with 'the fossil record'.
Of course there may be a fair bit of confusion with people thinking it is actually to discuss fossils...

Village midden, compost heap, boneyard, terminal morraine ----

Obviously the bird brain amongst us! Do we have one of those yet?

How about creating a History of Science section?

All real scientists for example use the "scientific method" but how many know it's history?
How many know, for instance, that Robert Grosseteste (1168 -1253) wrote "If experience does not match expectations, then expectations need to be rethought" and further stated " The investigator can never prove beyond doubt that any (hypothesis) is true, but a hypothesis can be framed so that it is possible to prove that it is not true". (Charles Murry -"Human Accomplishment")

Many more such things come to mind that have served as the foundation of all science, as we now know it, and how has been built.

I think that it is valuable for a scientist to understand the origins of his craft.

I'd certainly like to know more about mammoth hunting.
Barrett Digby wrote a book on it in 1926. I have not been able to get a copy yet.
The Mammoth and Mammoth Hunting in North-East Siberia.- B. Digby. London: H. F. and G. Witherby. 1926. 9 x 5i,pp. 224.

I'd like a copy myself - it's available, but beyond my budget:

Same here Andy.
Oh and it's Bassett Digby. I knew his name had something to do with a dog...
