If we can isolate the geomagnetic source signature, perhaps we could use quantum theory, fluid dynamics and thermo dynamics to learn things about convection in the outer core. This would in turn constrain our understanding of the mantle, because (a) we would be able to infer properties of the mantle from large spacial wavelength anomalies in the geomagnetic field, and (b) because we would learn stuff about D'', i.e., the lowermost layer in the mantle which reaches the interface at the core mantle boundary, which would constrain mantle convection. Our knowledge of mantle convection, constrains our understanding of plate tectonics and hot spot volcanism. These are the processes which we can see evidence of in the geological record.
I want to know if anybody has isolated a geomagnetic source signature.
