Have we got anybody here with experience of geological field mapping?
Where did you go, what did you see?
Any good stories?
I have spent 2 weeks in Assynt, Scotland; 6 weeks in East Kefalonia, Greek Island; and 6 weeks in the Cantabrian mountains near Villamanin, Spain. Mapping is a fantastic way to spend a summer, although it is hard work.

That would be interesting indeed. Perhaps the community is too small, yet. _________________ Moderator of http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/climatesceptics/

I'm sure a couple of the members here have done at least some mapping.
The thing I like most about mapping is the transformation into a nomad. You are once again vulnerable to attacks from large dogs, the fierce weather, and steep falls. You are kitted up with hiking boots, a notebook, a hammer, and you have your wits about you (unless you are hungover). With this, and perhaps a GPS and a compass-clino, you must try to unlock the secrets of the rocks beneath your feet. Invariably, however, it turns out to be more complicated than you had thought. The problem with mapping is when you've done you always know you could've done better; just a few more locations! |

Only a tiny bit of experience here... I spent a day mapping a tiny corner of Derbyshire as an exercise on a geology trip last year. Did quite badly, but hey, it was a first try...
